Santa Barbara Police arrested a 30-year-old man Friday after he allegedly shot an officer with a pellet gun near La Cumbre Plaza.
The officer attempted to contact the man on the 100 block of South La Cumbre Road at about 9:50 a.m., and he “produced what appeared to be a handgun and fired several shots at the officer,” Assistant Police Chief Marylinda Arroyo said.
The officer, whose name was not released, “returned fire with one round,” she said.
The officer was struck in the head by a round that was determined to be from a pellet gun, Arroyo said. The officer was transported to the hospital with injuries and released Friday afternoon.
The suspect, identified as Mitchell Grant Grote, was not hit by the officer’s gunfire, Arroyo said.
He ran into La Cumbre Plaza shopping center with a weapon in his hand, according to emergency radio traffic.
Grote attempted to barricade himself in a shopping center restroom, and multiple police officers responded to the scene and surrounded the area, Arroyo said.
He reportedly told officers he wanted to die, according to emergency radio traffic.
Some officers at the scene had weapons drawn, but no others discharged their firearms, Arroyo said.

Roughly a dozen officers surrounded a doorway, near the shopping center’s Lure Fish House, and ordered Grote to surrender.
Police took him into custody when he exited the building, and emergency crews loaded him into an ambulance.
Grote was taken into custody at about 10 a.m., and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, Arroyo said.

Danny, a witness who declined to give his last name, told Noozhawk he saw a female police officer sitting on the ground near O’Reilly Auto Parts off South La Cumbre Road with blood on her forehead.
He said that he called 9-1-1 from his car and followed the suspect into La Cumbre Plaza.
The Police Department was coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office on an officer-involved shooting investigation, Arroyo said.
“This was an isolated incident, and there is no further threat to public safety,” she said.
Police sent text emergency alerts to the community advising people to stay out of the area Friday morning. A follow-up message sent at 3:23 p.m. said the police activity at La Cumbre Plaza had concluded.
“Today’s events underscore the inherent dangers officers face every day in the service of our community,” Police Chief Kelly Gordon said in a statement.
“I am grateful for the swift actions of our personnel and the quick resolution of this incident. We remain committed to transparency and to keeping our community informed as the investigation proceeds.”
