One man died and a second was injured in a Saturday night double shooting in northwest Santa Maria, reportedly becoming the first homicide of the year in the city.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., Santa Maria police officers and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the 400 block of North Benwiley Street after receiving a report of a shooting, police Lt. Daniel Rios said on Sunday.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered that a shooting had taken place outside a residence where a large party was being held,” Rios added.

Two men suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Despite lifesaving measures, one of the victims was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The second victim received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery, Rios added.

Members of the Police Department’s Detective Bureau and Crime Lab responded to the scene.

The investigation into the shootings remains active and ongoing, Rios said.

As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, he added.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, limited information is being released,” Rios added.
