Four people were taken to the hospital early Thursday after a suspected DUI crash on Highway 101 near Gaviota.

The vehicle collision occurred shortly after 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes about a mile and a half south of Mariposa Reina, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

One vehicle ended up in the center median, while the other was blocking the left-hand lane, Safechuck said, adding that both sustained major front-end damage.

Details about the circumstances of the crash were not available from the California Highway Patrol, but Officer Jonathan Gutierrez told Noozhawk that one of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence.

That driver’s name was not available.

One of the four patients, an adult female, suffered moderate injuries, Safechuck said, while they other three — two women and a man — sustained minor injuries.

Two AMR ambulances were dispatched to the scene to transport the victims to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Their names and details on their conditions were not available.

The collision remained under investigation by the CHP.
